Every gain is measured from your 90-minute assessment baseline and tracked against UTR / ITF - real numbers, not vague promises.

Who this is for

Junior players with UTR 8-13 whose rating has been static for two or more quarters.

Players who train regularly but are not converting practice improvement into rated match wins.

Families who want to understand the UTR system before investing further in training volume.

The method

01

Understand what UTR actually measures

UTR is a match-performance metric, not a practice metric. It is calculated from match results against rated opponents - recent results weighted more heavily, opponent UTR factored in. The number only moves when you play rated matches and perform in them.

02

Identify the limiting factor

The 90-minute assessment identifies whether the gap between current UTR and potential UTR is technical (mechanics breaking under pressure), tactical (losing points at the wrong moment), physical (running out of quality late in sets), or match-density (simply not playing enough rated matches). The plan addresses the actual constraint.

03

Targeted technical correction - not more volume

The most common mistake is adding drilling hours when the real issue is one or two technical breakdowns under pressure. Stakhovsky Tennis approach identifies the two or three specific technical priorities that are directly costing UTR points and addresses those precisely.

04

Build the match-density plan

UTR requires match exposure. The program maps out the Czech, German, Austrian, and Slovak UTR-rated event calendar and builds a competition schedule that puts the player in the right UTR band, at the right frequency, to generate meaningful rating data.

05

Quarterly accountability

Every quarter: UTR delta, specific technical and tactical developments, and an updated plan. If UTR is not moving, the report says why and what changes.

How UTR rating actually works

What it measures: UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) measures match performance against rated opponents. Every match against a UTR-rated player contributes to your rating.

Weighting: Recent matches are weighted more heavily than older ones. The algorithm uses a rolling window - typically the last 30 rated matches, with recency decay.

Opponent UTR matters: Beating a player rated significantly above you contributes more to your rating than beating a player rated below you. The margin of the win (games won vs. games played) also contributes.

Practical implication: Playing four to six rated matches per month keeps the algorithm active. Playing eight to twelve per month in a structured competition calendar generates meaningful rating movement. Playing zero rated matches - regardless of how many hours of practice - produces zero UTR movement.

The correct target band: Matches within roughly 1.5 UTR points of your current rating contribute most signal. This defines which events and which opponents produce the most rating movement per match played.

FAQ

How does UTR actually calculate?

UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) is calculated from match results against rated opponents. Every match you play against a UTR-rated opponent contributes. Your rating reflects a weighted average of results - recent matches count more than older ones. Winning against higher-rated opponents lifts your UTR fastest; losing to much lower-rated opponents pulls it down. The system updates continuously. Key implication: UTR rises on match density against the right-level opponents - not on hours of drilling.

Why doesn't more practice raise my UTR?

Because UTR is a match-performance metric, not a practice-hours metric. Drilling improves the mechanics that make winning easier - but UTR only moves when you actually play rated matches and win them. The formula for UTR growth is: targeted technical correction + playing enough rated matches at the right UTR band.

What UTR band should I be playing matches at?

Matches within roughly 1.5 UTR points of your current rating contribute most to movement. Playing consistently below your UTR adds little signal. Playing consistently above it with losses still contributes data - often unfavourably. The correct band is individually assessed.

How long does it take to move UTR by 1 point?

This varies enormously by starting UTR, age, training hours, and match density. At UTR 8-10, a focused 6-month block with high match density typically produces 0.5-1.5 point movement. At UTR 11-13, movement of even 0.5 points reflects meaningful technical development. No specific outcome is guaranteed.

How many rated matches per month do you recommend?

At minimum, four to six rated matches per month to keep the UTR algorithm active. Eight to twelve in a structured period is the target for meaningful rating movement. The Prague region provides access to ITF and UTR-rated events that enable this density.
